Smoked and Colored Lights FAQs
auto window tinting
How long does it take to have tint installed on my vehicle?

The installation process generally takes about 2.5 to 3 hours (45 minutes to an hour for a pair of front windows) depending on the difficulty of the car, cleanliness, and the number of windows. Window tinting is not a race; we take our time to insure a quality install.

Anything I need to do to prepare my car for my tinting appointment?

We clean all windows inside and out, so there is no need for you to do that.

Please remove any extra items such as child safety seats, book bags, clothing, McDonald's trash, etc., that may clutter our workspace. The more stuff in our way, the longer it will take us to get the job done.

Does tinting go on the inside or outside?

Tinting is installed on the inside of the windows. If you see our installers handling the film on the outside of the glass, they are just cutting patterns or shrinking the rear window film to the curvature of the glass.

What do I use to clean my tinted windows?

TNT uses and recommends a microfiber towel along with Plexus Plastic Cleaner (available at our shop). Do not use any ammonia-based products or abrasive cleaning pads. Soapy water and a cloth or old T-shirt will also work just fine.

How long must I wait to roll down my door windows?

We suggest keeping your windows up for 3 to 5 days until the film cures. In the winter months we usually recommend a slightly longer wait.

I just got my windows tinted. They look streaky and bubbly. What's up?

Every vehicle that leaves our shop looks like this. When applying our film we use water. This water gets trapped between the film and the glass and looks streaky and/or bubbly. This is normal and usually goes away in about 3 to 5 days (in the winter it can take a week or longer). To speed up the drying process, park the vehicle in the sun so that the water can evaporate.

Will tint damage my rear defroster?

Your rear defroster will work as if there were no tint ever applied. We tint over all the defroster lines. You can use your defroster immediately after tinting installation.

Will the window film you applied fade or turn purple?

We use only top-quality film. All TNT customers receive a nationwide lifetime warranty. This means if you ever move away from the Madison area, you can take your vehicle to any shop that installs Llumar or 3M window film and the warranty will be honored. The warranty covers any bubbling, purpling, peeling, fading, or cracking.

How durable is window tinting?

Our window film is protected by a scratch-resistant coating that can withstand everyday wear and tear. The key word, however, is "resistant." This doesn't mean scratch-PROOF. Use care when loading and unloading larger objects or handling items with sharp edges, such as some jewelry. Also use care when taking off your seatbelt, which could nick or gouge your window film. These are some of the most common issues we see that are not covered in the warranty.

Why do other shops charge less?

Some shops use cheap, low-quality films. Over time these inferior films will just bubble and/or turn purple. Be sure to choose a shop with a good reputation. Remember that experience is very important! Some shops have installers who lack the experience and skills necessary for a quality installation. Such facilities may have someone who does detailing, rustproofing, and dent removal, and then one day here and there is expected to do tinting as well. You cannot achieve a great tint job if it's someone who doesn't do tinting on a regular basis. TNT's owner/installer Steve has been installing films for 12 years.

Does the tint go to the top of the glass?

We "shave" all of our top edges with a razor blade to get that factory look. No inch gaps here! That looks horrible! It's garbage! Don't accept any gaps. That is the difference between TNT and others.

Can window film be removed?

Yes, window film can be removed. It is not a fun job, and quite messy. It is recommended to have a professional remove the film. Use caution on the rear glass if you have defroster lines.

How much is tinting going to run me?

Pricing widely ranges, depending on the vehicle. Different vehicles require different tricks and approaches. TNT's pricing is honesty-based. Please contact us and we will provide you an accurate quote!

What is dot matrix?

Most cars have a black ceramic "frit" edge on the rear window. Sometimes this ceramic edge is straight and flat, while sometimes it will have a dotted edge. These black ceramic dots are quite thick on most cars and prevent the window film from sticking to the area between the dots. This results in a whitish-looking area. Typically this isn't very noticeable, however some cars have a wide band of dots on the top of the rear window used for shading the passengers riding in the back seat. This area is so wide that the whitish-looking area created is more noticeable. At TNT we scrub the dot matrix as much as possible, but unfortunately the film will not lie completely flat on the dot matrix. Once the tinting is dry, we suggest a second visit so that we can touch up that area.
