Paint Protection FAQs
auto paint protection
Why was paint protection developed?

Paint protection was originally developed by 3M to protect the leading edge of helicopter blades in the Vietnam War from sand and debris.

What areas of the car will be covered?

Every year, make, and model of vehicle can be different. The most common areas to protect are the hood, fenders, side mirrors, bumper, headlights, top of the rear bumper, and door edges. You have the option to protect any area on the vehicle. Some other great areas to consider protecting are door handles, rocker panels, behind the tires, and door sills (where you drag your foot when getting in and out of the vehicle). Our patterns are professionally designed and computer cut-based on each year, make, and model. You get to pick which areas you want protected. We don't require purchasing a complete kit. We also do custom pieces in ANY area.

How is paint protection film maintained?

When the film is first applied, refrain from washing the vehicle for about a week until the film cures. Washing after that time presents no problem, and no special care need be taken for the film. We recommend also staying out of any power car washes for about a week after the installation.

Can I use wax on paint protection film?

Yes. When waxing the vehicle, some wax may build up along the film edges, but this can easily be removed with a soft cloth when dry. Do not use any waxes containing dyes or waxes that are not recommended for urethanes. Abrasive polishes and/or rubbing compounds are not to be used. Do not use any rotary buffers, which can cause significant damage to the film. Always hand wax the protected areas.

What products do you recommend
to best maintain the paint protection film?

We recommend a plastic cleaner called Plexus that can be used after washing to keep the film shiny and dust-free. We sell this product. With every full paint protection installation we supply our customers an aftercare kit which includes care instructions, a can of Plexus cleaner, and a microfiber towel.

Will the areas protected fade under the sun?

Yes. The film we use is UV stable, which will allow UV rays to penetrate. You will not be left with a "two-toned" look as with traditional leather car bras.

Will the paint protection film harm the
painted surface if the film is removed?

If the film is properly applied to a vehicle's original paint or a fully cured aftermarket painted vehicle, there is no need to worry. The film can be removed in one piece, without damaging paint surfaces beneath the film. The adhesive will be removed with the film.

Can paint protection film be applied over
a vehicle that has had the paint touched up?

We recommend that any repainted surfaces on your vehicle be professionally painted and fully cured before applying paint protection film. If you have touched up scratches or chips with a tube of "touch-up" paint and then apply paint protection film over it, the film will protect that area until it is removed. If the paint protection film is removed, it is possible that the area around the non-professional touch-up paint could peel off.

What are some characteristics of a poorly installed clear bra?

* Excessive stretch marks — When paint protection film is stretched past its threshold, a significant change in the texture of the film will appear. A small amount of this is acceptable around compound curves, but should be very minimal.

* Gaps at the body edges due to poor pattern design or misalignment

* Air or water bubbles that do not go away due to improper squeegee technique

* Dust or dirt under the film

Why should I pay more for paint protection
film when I can use a bra or bug shield?

Paint protection film will NOT damage your vehicle's finish. Bras have been known to rub underneath and bug shields can rust or rub as well, which defeats the purpose of having them on your vehicle. Furthermore, you cannot even see our film once it is applied. Leather bras and bug shields are obviously very noticeable.
